Beijing became the only city in the world to stage both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games.

With co-host city Zhangjiakou in neighboring Hebei province, Beijing eclipsed Almaty, Kazakhstan by 44-40 in a close-fought vote.

Beijing will host the Games in three venue clusters - downtown Beijing for ice sports, and northwest Yanqing county and Zhangjiakou for skiing events. A high-speed railway will cut travel time from Beijing to Zhangjiakou to 50 minutes.
