9. Alibaba makes biggest IPO in US history

China’s biggest e-commerce company Alibaba vowed the global markets in September when it claimed to be the largest US-listed Initial Public Offering of all time. The online shopping and payment site raised a record $25 billion in New York with each share sold at $68.

Founder Jack Ma, with a fortune of $28.6 billion, passed Li Ka-shing, the Hong Kong property and ports tycoon, as Asia's richest person in December.

Alibaba's $259 billion market capitalization makes it larger than and EBay combined and more valuable than all but eight companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 Index.
