Celebrities getting doused by buckets of freezing water turned out to be the hottest issue on China’s social media this year.

The challenge started after an American named Pete Frates posted a video on Facebook calling on his friends to douse themselves with cold water to raise awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a debilitating neurodegenerative condition.

The move soon evolved into a viral campaign on China’s web sphere but also sparked controversy. People living in drought-stricken areas poured cold water on the stunt, citing it a wasteful PR exercise for some companies.

The campaign raised a record 8.5 million yuan but ended up in a row between two Chinese rare disease sufferers over the distribution of the money.
