Since Donald Trump assumed office in January 2017, a lot of uncertainties have emerged in the China-US relationship, which is crucial to both countries and the world. The just finished two-day meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Trump, which is expected to set a tone for the future relationship between the two countries, drew the attention of the whole world.
Handshake, talk, friendly expressions. All these signaled friendliness of the two presidents to each other.
President Xi said he and Trump had “engaged in deeper understanding and have built trust” and believed that they will “keep developing in a stable way to form friendly relations,” while Trump said he is looking forward to a “very very great relationship” with Xi.
During the visit, Trump’s grandson and granddaughter sang a traditional Chinese ballad, “Jasmine Flower”, and recited poetry for Xi and Peng.
During the two-day meeting, Trump has accepted Xi’s invitation to China, and is expected to visit Beijing this year.
That personal rapport and a good working relationship between the two leaders, as well as mutual trust is probably more important than signing an agreement or making an announcement during the two-day meeting.
The US-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue and the High-level Consultation on People-to-People Exchanges have been held for eight and seven times respectively. The two events play a significant role in promoting exchanges between the two countries on both governmental and non-governmental levels.
The two countries have established new high-level dialogue mechanisms concerning diplomacy, economy, law enforcement, cyber security, as well as people-to-people exhchanges. The high-level dialogue mechanisms will help to create a new framework of communication between the two countries, and optimize dialogue mechanisms in specialized area.
Dealing with conflicts
Trade is a major issue between China and the US, which has raised concerns throughout the world over a trade war between the two countries. Fortunately, the two presidents have agreed to a new 100-day plan for trade talks that will boost US exports and reduce the US trade deficit with China.
China and the US have always had to undergo a process to adjust to each other when dealing with conflicts, due to the differences in ideology, history and culture. As long as the direction is right, problems can be solved.
The relationship between the largest developed country and the largest developing country in the world deeply affects the world’s political and economic pattern. A smooth relationship between the two countries benefits not only the two countries but also the whole world.
The China-US relationship was officially established 38 years ago, and it has benefited people from both countries despite many ups-and-downs in the past four decades. The future China-US relationship will depend on efforts made by both leaders and people of the two countries.
