Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump reached a consensus during their first meeting held at the Mar-a-Lago resort on the establishment of four new high-level dialogue mechanisms focusing on diplomacy and security; the economy; law enforcement and cyber security; and social and people-to-people exchanges.
In his remarks, President Xi emphasized the great importance of the China-US relations. There are "a thousand reasons to make the China-US relationship work, and no reason to break it," he told President Trump, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.
The Chinese president proposed that the two countries should join hands to push forward negotiations on the Bilateral Investment Treaty and healthy development of bilateral trade and investment, deepen cooperation on infrastructure construction, energy, non-proliferation and crackdown on cross-border crimes, manage the differences in sensitive international and regional affairs, and strengthen communication and coordination in multinational organizations such as the United Nations and G20.
Bullish on the prospects of the trade and economic cooperation between the two countries, President Xi invited the US to take part in the Beijing-led "One Belt, One Road" initiative, as China pushes forward its supply-side reform, the China News Service reported.
China and the US should make good use of the dialogue mechanism for law enforcement and cyber security to combat drug and child trafficking, money laundering, cyber espionage, corruption and so on, President Xi said.
President Xi also stressed the importance of people-to-people exchanges between the two countries, saying that it will provide a positive force for the deepening of the healthy bilateral ties.
President Trump hailed the start of "a very, very great relationship" with President Xi. "We have had a long discussion already and so far I have gotten nothing, absolutely nothing," he joked. "But we have developed a friendship – I can see that – and I think in the long term we are going to have a very, very great relationship and I look very much forward to it."
The American president said that the two countries had started direct communication on opening the dialogue mechanisms focusing on diplomacy and security and the economy, expressing willingness to enhance the two countries' military ties.
At a press conference on the afternoon of April 7, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that the Xi-Trump meeting symbolizes a new start of the bilateral relationship, even though the meeting did not create "specific deliverables".
Regarding the North Korean nuclear issue, the two leaders pledged to enhance cooperation on denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, Tillerson said.
At the press conference, US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said that the two leaders agreed to a 100-day plan for trade talks that will boost US exports and reduce US trade deficit with China.
"Given the range of issues and the magnitude, that may be ambitious, but it is a very big sea change in the pace of discussion," Ross said. "I think that is a very important symbol of the growing rapport between the two countries."
