In his work report delivered to the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on October 18, Xi Jinping put forward the axiom of "China entering a new era". Meanwhile, Xi also explained the thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era.

On October 19, at a group discussions, several members of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee interpreted the thought as Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.

Since the adoption of the reform and opening up policy, the CPC has long stressed the concept of socialism with Chinese characteristics. This time, the inclusion of "new era" and "Xi Jinping" into the political term clearly shows a profound meaning.

The thoughts created by the CPC to serve the reform and opening up policy have proved to be well-timed, and helped the party to overcome various theoretical and practical challenges.

The Deng Xiaoping Theory solved the problem of ideological emancipation, replacing dogmatism with factualism and transforming the economy to a more market-oriented one. Under the leadership of Jiang Zemin, the Thoughts of Three Represents expanded the representativeness of the CPC, casting aside the theory of class struggle. During Hu Jintao's presidency, the Scientific Outlook on Development gave an answer to development. Compared with the former top leaders' thoughts, the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era boasts four features.

Firstly, Xi's thought emphasizes "new era", a key word explaining that the basic social contradiction has changed and that China is at a decisive phase of finishing building the moderately prosperous society and a strong modern socialist country. In other word, the thought will lead us to be stronger and wealthier.

Secondly, Xi's thought attaches great importance to a development path that is all-around and balanced. In Xi's report, the word "all-around" is used frequently.   China's development strategy has shifted focus to common prosperity from "letting a part of people get rich", as Xi values poverty relief. Besides, he also sees ecological construction as a major task.

Thirdly, Xi's thought features a deeper international vision, which is pillared by the ideas of building the new type of international relations and the common community of human destiny. Xi not only wants China to be a participant of international order but also a creator. These ideas will lead to a great change in China's relationship with the whole world. Under the circumstances, where the China-US relationship will go remains to be seen.

Fourthly, Xi's thought shoulders the historical responsibility. On the one hand, Xi vows to build China into a powerful nation by the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC. On the other hand, he harbors the aspiration of revitalizing the Chinese nation.

In a word, Xi's thought is a summary of the experience of the past three decades and an updated version of the past guiding thoughts. It is predictable that Xi's thought would be written into the Party constitution as customary.
