The Chinese army has gradually normalized its overseas operations in the recent years with growing assertiveness, said a military officer.

Liu Fang, a staff officer of the Office for International Military Cooperation of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks at a group interview on Sunday evening during the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

The normalization of China's overseas military operations is reflected in its participation in the United Nations peace-keeping operations and international disaster relief, according to Liu.

So far, China has accumulatively dispatched 36,000 soldiers and military officers to participate in the UN peace-keeping operations, among whom 13 soldiers died on the front lines, said Liu.

Last month, China just completed the registration of an 8,000-people corps on call to participate in the peace-keeping operations of the UN.

"China has always been a supporter and participant in the UN peace-keeping operations, taking seriously its responsibility as a big power," said Liu.

Liu also hailed the Chinese military's contribution to the international disaster relief, saying that professional rescue teams and relief supplies would always be sent to the disaster areas in time.

Since 2008, the Chinese navy has started working with its foreign counterparts to conduct escort missions in the waters of the Gulf of Aden. China has accumulatively sent 83 warships on the escort missions, protecting more than 6,300 Chinese and foreign ships, noted Liu.

The Chinese army has also taken part in international humanitarian relief, in which free medical care services were offered to the local residents, according to Liu.

What's more, the Chinese military also made contribution to the crackdown on cross-border crimes and terrorism, said the military officer, adding that China has established consultation mechanisms on defense strategy with 28 countries including the United States.

Over the recent two years, China and the United States have improved the mutual reporting mechanism on major military operations and the code of safe conduct on naval and air military encounters, said Liu.
