A man wielding a knife went on rampage and wounded 23 pupils at a primary school in Henan province on December 14. What’s worse, the local authority's apparently irresponsible and indifferent attitude toward the tragedy led to a public outcry. Chinese citizens had blasted a local newspaper, Xinyang Daily, for lauding the city's "great achievements" in education in a report issued just two days after the bloodshed. The paper later posted a front-page apology for insulting the injured students and their families.

Others on microblogs criticized authorities for not revealing enough details about the attack. Even state news reporters were turned away by authorities when trying to interview school officials or injured children. The local government’s response stood in stark contrast to what US authorities did after a gunman killed 27 in an American elementary school on the same day.
