2. Diaoyu Islands dispute escalates

The China-Japan relationship went from bad to worse due to the Diaoyu Islands dispute after the Japanese government announced the “purchase” of Diaoyu Islands on September 11. China in response sent its maritime surveillance ships to waters around the islands to assert sovereignty. The outraged Chinese people staged large-scale protests and demonstrations all over the country. However, the show of patriotism was marred by violence when mobs went on rampage to smash Japanese-brand cars and loot stores.
