Chinese tourists most unwelcome group around world

Chinese tourists, though generous spenders, have recently been listed as the most unwelcomed group by a well-known foreign website. Experts say the major reason for this is that Chinese people know little about the local customs and etiquette when travelling in a foreign country.

Take Thailand for example. Thailand is a country where tourists need to tip the tour guide at the end of a trip, but some Chinese tourists refuse to do so.

The dictum “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” is important to remember when traveling. Wang Wei, a tour leader at Chongqing China International Service Agency, said, “Chinese tourists talk too loudly, even in churches and museums. Western people like quiet private spaces, so they always complain about noises made by the Chinese tourists.”

Wang Wei once took a group of Chinese tourists to the Palace of Versailles in Paris. Two couples spent so much time taking photos before a statue that a British tour group lost their patience to wait for their turn to take photos with the statue and left.

Peng Lei, an associate professor from the Institute of Social Sciences of Chongqing University, said, “We can be respected only if we respect local people and their customs. We should learn about the local customs before traveling. Only when you know something about the local customs can you get into closer contact with the culture of that country.”

Peng also said tourists cannot know everything about a country so it is the duty of travel agencies to tell them about what can be done and what cannot. Training for tour guides and leaders should be conducted on a regular basis. A tour guide or leader should also take the blame if anyone in his/her group has done something that shouldn’t be done due to his/her failure to tell them about it.
